Canoeing and Colourful Sights at Opapiskaw

Updated: Apr 3

Our very first time camping and canoeing. Say hello to the silvertip.

Every so often I come across certain experiences that I add to my 'notable moments adventure list.' I think this is something everyone keeps tucked away in their memory bank. These are moments of time that stand out in my memories as flickers in my life that are so special, so beautiful, and so memorable that I won't forget them. There's a lot of them to be honest. They can be entire trips, or moments within a trip. On this particular weekend, I was thankful to have received both.

Ready to Hit the Road

Our home for the weekend was a campsite right on the water in Opapiskaw Campground here in Manitoba and we left from Winnipeg after my husband and I were both done work. I don't want to say it's the price we pay, but rather the commitment and choice to get a jump start on a well deserved weekend of adventure and time away in nature. You do what you gotta do to make the most of a Manitoba summer. Because well, it's worth it.

Right on the Water

Our home for the weekend was waterfront site #3 right on Nutimik Lake. It was a long and narrow site with a short walk to the washroom. The site was of comfortable size to host our vehicle, tent, and canoe. After a quick evening setup and with our campfire ready to go, it was time for dinner.

Friday Night Pizza Night

Since it was Friday, we knew we were up for a long after work, evening drive, but we were okay with that. More importantly, we weren't up for missing Friday Night Pizza Night. A tradition we've had together for the past couple of years. So, we grabbed a pre-made flatbread pizza from co-op, a pre made bagged salad and we were on our way. Sometimes, easy and simple is okay! Friday Night Pizza Bowls are just what we needed.

Morning Delight

Every time I go out camping or adventuring, I truly commit to trying to wake up for the sun rise. If anyone knows me, you know what a difficult effort that is. I'm a girl who loves her sleep! But on this morning, I woke up in the early hour with the help of some cozy clothes and caffeine. I'm so glad that I did. I'm all about cozy vibes, stunning sights, and coffee views. Call it basic, but it completes me.

An Afternoon Cruise

We took the afternoon to take our very first cruise in our new-to-us canoe, which we've named the silver tip. #IYKYK. We had the most beautiful time canoeing around Nutimik Lake with tea in tow. The water was glistening in the sun, the rock provided neat landscape features and we even found a nice spot to do off-rock swimming. Apparently that's a word I've made up? You know, when we were kids and we would go swimming off large rocks at the beach. The feeling of the rock and grit hitting your toes and easily swimming out into the lake. If you don't know what I mean, you ought to try it sometime.

Pasta and a Paddle

And if an epic day paddling around a peninsula and checking out how our new rig runs wasn't enough, we topped off the evening with a sunset paddle. We were sitting around the campfire after a tasty pasta dinner., with our feet up and some evening beverages. I could see the evening sky colour change behind the trees and I knew the sun was setting. I looked onto the lake and it was fairly calm with a few small waves. Some of the best moments are the impromptu ones.

Bites at Barrier Bay

During the summer, Barrier Bay Resort hosts the Barrier Grill Food Truck, which is home to coffee, churros, snacks and more. After we packed up in the morning, we stopped by for coffees and breakfast sandwiches to go! I was craving a hot coffee, Donald was craving a cold one. They had an impressive offering of food and beverage items and they were tasty. I highly recommend stopping by to see them when they're open!

After a beautiful weekend away, we were on the road home, back to Winnipeg.
