Why You Need to Make Big Mac Tacos ASAP

This food endeavour is worth both your time and a spot at the kitchen table.

I can't say that every kid remembers their very first Big Mac burger, but I can say that I sure do.

It's funny, I honestly still remember the first time I tried a Big Mac burger from McDonald's. Being six years old, the cheeseburger happy meal was my go to and I had always wondered how I would ever be able to consume a Big Mac one day. I obviously knew I liked the burger, with my dad sharing a bite with me every now and then. But it wasn't enough, I wanted my own burger. Later that year, I went for it and finished my first Big Mac all on my own. Now remember, this was 26 years ago and I swear the burgers were bigger then and that McDonald's burgers and patties have since gotten smaller.

Many, many years later and now well into adulthood I can say that I indulge in a Big Mac maybe once or twice a year, it's all that I need and all that I crave. Something 'bout that sauce, y'know? But when I came across this new "food fad" online, Big Mac Tacos, I couldn't help but wonder if such a feat was even worth the try. Do I risk tainting my love for both tacos and the Big Mac in the search of something new? Of course I took the chance, and I'm so glad that I did.

The whole concept seemed utterly wild. The notion of putting raw meat, smashed onto a soft tortilla into the frying pan and then turning the concoction into a Big Mac taco? What the actual heck. I googled the recipe online, found one that seemed promising and went for it.

The prep wasn't too bad and the second time we made them the process went even faster. But the best part? It's worth every step, chop, slice and dice. I was impressed with the recipe and even more impressed by the sauce! I Am A Food blog was the thankful hero in this brigade.

Being gluten free was easy with this recipe, I simply left out breadcrumbs in the patty and opted in for soft corn tortilla shells. My husband didn't even mind the slight difference in taste compared to a regular wheat tortilla. The best advice I have, is take the time to chop, dice and slice the way the recipe recommends. It makes an absolute world of difference as the texture of the individual ingredients greatly affects the taste profile of the completed taco. Don't tell me you didn't like it if you didn't cry your way through dicing up those little white onion bits. No pain, no gain, right?

The end result was both savoury and satisfying. To be honest it was a bit of a jumble to the brain, registering Big Mac flavour, but not the famous Big Mac form. Once you get over the brain jumble, your taste buds are met with crisp crunchy lettuce, a zesty and familiar sauce, the crunch of the taco shell and all of the good bits in between. It was equally messy as it was fun. But maybe that's just me and I'm the messy eater?

So if you want to make a fun and creative meal for dinner that will have your spouse saying huh, or need a new popular dinner item around the family table that will leave the kids saying woah, this one's for you!

Happy Big Mac Taco'ing.
